Cecilia Rivera

The immediate response to the paintings of Cecilia Rivera is to her expressive use of color, the energy and beauty seized by a broad application of paint and obviously personal interpretations of a romantic and aesthetic vision of the world.

The revelation contained in her art consists of an act of emotional discovery rendered in all-over fields of color applied with a mass of free, interpenetrating strokes, shapes and layers of pigment for rich surface effects.  This freshness of approach, capturing the essence of an abstract  reality which results in an exalted romantic feeling of the secret language of colors which enliven all the senses and the interactions with memories.

Born in Cuernavaca, Rivera’s academic achievements, bridging a period of more than twenty four years, include studies in history of the arts at the Instituto de Bellas Artes in Cuernavaca and the Louvre Museum in Paris, as well as studies in the history of phenomenology of religions at the Anahuac University and a degree in history of art earned at the Instituto de Cultura Superior de México in 1989.  Her early formation as a painter was guided by the late Robin Bond of the Royal Academy of London, more than thirty years ago, is when Rivera discovered her true artistic inclination towards the abstract, strongly influenced by her earlier studies and research in symbology and mythology.

“It is in the territory of feminine identity of Mexican painting that the interior vision has the deepest impact on such artists as Irma Palacios or the late Lilia Carillo and now Rivera.  In this context, Cecilia Rivera’s work provides us with a notable battle of veils, a difficult work which consists of penetrating the soul promoting the encounter of interior forces, whose exactitude gestates precisely in their expression on the canvas.” ”Blending the intimate with the cosmic.”
